COMFORT

There are some feelings you never forget… I was 17 the first time I remember experiencing it. The gaping hole that hurts so bad you catch yourself gasping for breath. And with my fever rising, finals approaching, voice lost, far away from home, I was able to diagnose the main issue myself.

I wanted needed my mother.

She might not have been able to take the pneumonia away or help me prepare for my history final, but somehow in a way only a mom could, she would have made it feel all better.

For comfort is a super power every mom has.

And I think of my Heavenly Father, getting ready to send off His only Son into the wild world… What is the first thing He secures for Him? Who is the first one He goes to … to ensure He will be watched over, cared for, loved, sheltered, until His time has come?

Mary swaddled Him. Soothed Him. Gave a part of herself to Him because that’s what we mom’s do.

I’m closing in on four decades of needing the one God gave me. When roads collide, when answers seem lost, when pain fogs my vision, when babies are born still, my heart still calls to her. Because by His design, the power to wipe away hurt with a single kiss never fades. The strength found in a mom’s embrace always renews. Hope is always found in her simple reassurances.

And now, as I have the honor of being one myself, I realize where that power comes from.

Comfort is found when another lays their life down for you. Always in love, for it’s the only thing capable of such a task. And a mother’s love goes far. deep. wide. It can stretch and mold itself like the soothing balm it is.

Mamas, it’s a gift He gives us. This super power to love like Jesus loves. It may not feel like much, but believe me when I tell you — you bring comfort when all hope is gone.

You are Wonder Woman. Comfort in the flesh.

STOP.

  1. My own mother found it very difficult to comfort me when I was young. She was just trying to put one foot in front of the other, so I don’t have the sweet memories of mine that you wrote of here. But… I do remember that first realization, and how sweet it was, that my mother was there and finally ready to comfort me. And, while it didn’t happen until well into adulthood, it was a thing of beauty when it finally did. Such a big thing, a mother’s love, isn’t it?

    • I have the same experience as you, Missy. God has been faithful to put other women in my life over the years that could mentor and comfort me, though. Very grateful for that. The experience of not having that as a child, though, made me make a very conscious effort to make sure my child did not experience the same thing.

  2. Wowsa! Mama thems are power FULL words. Thank you. Plus the ducks. I love me some ducks. Ok, my dear, beautiful post and on that note I am off too snooze land…pondering that I can do all things…am WOMAN, am MOTHER. Beautiful post, Nikki.

  3. My daughter is at the age (two, almost three) where she seems to be in constant need of comfort from me. I love being the one she runs to…just having the chance to wrap my arms around her and hold her. It’s the best. πŸ™‚ And I’m only getting a small taste of what my Father must feel like when I run to Him for comfort. Beautiful post, friend…blessings! πŸ™‚

  4. I loved this my friend. Although my children are at the age where they feel they do not need my comforting embrace, I long to hold them and comfort them. They will never be too old for this mama’s arms!

  5. Dear Nikki
I always say that the nearest love to that of our Pappa here on earth, can only be the love of a mother! We moms know of no stronger bond or love than that for our children!
    Blessings to you, sweet friend
    Mia

  7. The true comfort does finally come when we realize the giver of that super-power, doesn’t it? I love that God uses us moms to be ‘Jesus with skin on’ for those he has give into our care. Thanks so much for sharing your heart with us today,

  8. So…. I really AM a Super Hero, then? I always suspected! πŸ˜‰ I love you so and this is so much truth, right here! It is a supernatural gift poured out… and one we shouldn’t take for granted! Love you sweet friend! Misses you last night!

  10. Oh Nikki….here I go blubbering again!! You have such a gift with words. No one knows what true love is until they have a child. Then when you experience pregnancy again, you wonder how you can possibly love that second child like you loved the first. God has a way of multiplying your love for more {and more and more} children, not dividing but multiplying. I love you dear and always well. I am so proud of the mother that you have become. I so wished we lived closer so we could share those “hugs” more often. See you Sunday!!! πŸ™‚

  11. So beautiful Nikki!

“Comfort in the flesh” I needed to hear this today as I struggled yesterday with my own son’s hurts. I can’t make them go away, but I can be his comfort and direct him to The One who can heal all wounds.

    Have a blessed mothers day!

  12. Okay my turn… Oh. My. Lanta. This image of God using Mary to make sure His son, the Son of God was comforted – well the tears are flowing. Thank you friend for that sweet image. Just thank you.

  14. This was just beautiful! Thank you so much for this tribute to Moms.
I had tears in my eyes as I read. Wish I could be with my own mom this Sunday, but we are separated by too many miles. I am sending this post to her, and I know it will bless her as it has me. You have a precious gift with words. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  15. Growing up, it was my job to be that comforter – and I wanted to comfort my boys – not the other way around – I hope my boys feel like that – like they have a mom who is a comfort giver:)

  16. That is beautiful. Mothers are comforts…and we comfort.”When roads collide, when answers seem lost, when pain fogs my vision, when babies are born still, my heart still calls to her. Because by His design, the power to wipe away hurt with a single kiss never fades.” This is so true. It really never fades. What influence we have as a mother! I love your post. Found you over at FMF.

  17. Yes! My mom has the super power to comfort me and love me….just like Jesus! Unconditionally. And the love that I feel for my children, a love like no other love, equips me. This Mother’s Day I thank God for the great honor of being a mama.

  18. It is a blessing to be born into a family with a mother that can give you comfort. I have been blessed with that kind of mother. I am also thankful for the other women who have taken on a mothering role in my life when I find myself far from my mom. Comfort is definitely a mom thing.
